The same goes for the power system. The circuit has malfunctioned and someone needs to 'step on the brake' - quickly cut off the faulty section to prevent the fault from spreading.
In the AC power grid, this' brake 'is called an AC circuit breaker, and the technology is already very mature. But in the DC power grid, this' brake 'is called a DC circuit breaker, which is several times more difficult.
Why? Because AC power will "zero" 50 times per second (50Hz), the moment the current returns to zero, the arc will naturally extinguish, and the circuit breaker can take the opportunity to disconnect. But direct current is constant, the current never returns to zero, and the arc will never extinguish on its own.
AC circuit breakers are "waiting for the current to turn off before stepping on the brake", while DC circuit breakers are "forcibly cutting it off while the current is still surging". The difficulty is not on the same scale.
